The Choir
There has been a choir at St Peter and St Paul's Church for many years and at present there are about fifteen members. The choir leads the 09.25 Parish Communion and sings a wide variety of music including Margaret Rizza, items from Mission Praise, Taizé, Iona and Church anthems.
A letter from the Choirmaster, Peter Harle:
Dear Friends and Fellow Parishioners
As you all know I have been busily developing and extending the church choir repertoire and singing style. We really need a couple more tenors and a couple more basses. The major development is to recruit up to 20 boys and girls aged 8 to 13 – ideally equally boys and girls – so that we can work on the quality and repertoire of our corporate offering to God.
If you or any of your friends can offer suitable youngsters, I will be grateful and delighted. Talk to me in church or telephone me on 01749 347125
What I expect from would be choristers:
The ability to read
The ability to sing in tune in the treble register
A willingness as a chorister and as a family to accept the necessary commitment
The commitment:
Attendance at the practice in church every Friday from 6.45 pm to 8.40 pm
Attendance at choral services in church - normally a morning service plus one evening service a month plus extras such as Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Ascension day, Christmas Eve Midnight and Christmas morning
Occasional weddings – for which the choristers will be paid
Occasional events in Wells Cathedral
The holiday norm will be the week after Christmas, the week after Easter, the last week of July and all of August
I value loyalty, punctuality and regular attendance highly
The benefits:
Musical skill development at a high level
Experience of singing in a high quality ensemble singing a wide range of good quality church music
Listening / concentration/ team work / acceptance of responsibility
Mutual dependence between musical colleagues, both children and adults
Active participation in a living Christian church with a major responsibility in leading worship
Development of a scale of values which is outside the commercial norm
Application forms are available from the parish office. Please complete one and bring it with you to the audition. Auditions normally take place in church before Friday Choir Practice (6.20 pm – 6.40 pm) where the north door of the church will be open
