Garden of Remembrance

The mighty Martin WoodAt the east end of the churchyard lies the Garden of Remembrance. It's a place where the ashes of loved ones are scattered and a plaque is laid in their memory.

In recent years the plot of land has become full and so it was decided to extend the garden out into the main churchyard to provide space for many years to come.

The main obstacle was the fact that 16 Lawson Cypress trees had been planted about twenty years ago and these needed to be felled in order to make way for a new border hedge of Copper Beech.

After a faculty had been raised and all due planning permissions obtained, work on extending the garden began. In early December 2006, the trees were felled and shredded and the root stumps removed.

SaplingsPlanting of 65 copper beech saplings followed on a clear and crisp Saturday morning and these should reach maturity in a few years' time. The new hedge will not be more than a metre or so high enabling a degree of seclusion in the garden without totally shielding it from public view.

Mendip District Council provided a new tarmac path which will eventually be extended into the garden. Further enhancements will also be made to the bench seating and with the addition of a wrought iron gate.
